Witnessing A Beautiful Addict

Starting out earlier today , I have to pick up a prescription before it slips my mind. As I disembark the bus on my way to the pharmacy who do I run into none other ‘Wildman’. Still unclean and clothes in tatters, I asked him if he had eaten . He relied, “hi baby” for me that was enough for me to say to him..I addressed you Sir and expect you to be respectful to me.” He apologized and spoke to me in a normal fashion. I gave him food and water and departed saying “enjoy your lunch and see you again” , his reply was “thank you ma’am.” Picked up my medicine and continued on my way which took me up Castro Street where I passed a man sitting against the wall of a store. I turned around and went back to him ( so glad I did) , looking at him closer it was clear he did not eat regularly..so thin. He was glad to have the food and water but I felt he was just as happy someone was talking to him. He thanked me with a God Bless You ma’am in which I thanked him for his sentiment.

Walking down Market Street I could see a set-up of blankets, carts etc. so I headed towards it. Sitting on the mounds of cloth was a beautiful women in the mist of cleaning an injection needle with bottle water.  Admitting to the fact how startle I was is an understatement!  As I came closer she was very pleasant and polite though not a shame of what she held in her hand. I spoke to her like I do to the rest asking if she would like food and a fresh bottle of water. She replied, ” She really would and how pretty I looked”. I noticed then a small dog on the pile of blankets (cute dog with a bow in its fur) , she proceeded to tell the dog that they had food now. I started to say to her how unhealthy that food was for her dog but decided not too. She didn’t need a Vet lesson because after all it was food. I left her not passing judgment nor inquisitive about her life.

I came upon the man I refer as ‘snaggertooth” whom had disappeared for a couple of weeks. I asked him ” Where had he been?” which he reluctantly said “I been around” I left it at that. After giving him lunch and with a thank you from him we departed.  A few yards from him were ‘the couple’ who tell me the beginning of the month they don’t need food because they have food stamps. They run out of food from the middle to the last of the month and were looking for me yesterday. They were happy just receiving a bologna sandwich, crackers, raisins and bottle water.

Think about what we have and what we think makes us happy…

Blessings All
