This month’s beginning was another eye opener, I found out through the mouths of homeless women..the real deal.  At the close of  the day after passing out all but two food packs, I came upon one lady on a corner standing barefoot on newspaper. Around her were bags and suitcases, clothes hanging out of these bags as well as shoes. As I approached her I could smell urine but I spoke to her as if she smelled like she was wearing the finest French perfume. She was very friendly and  very complimentary …getting her to focus on the food I was offering took a hot minute. By this time the person I gave a hug to last week approached,  she knew the lady I was talking too. Acknowledging me she wanted food if I had any left, passing the last pack to her she began telling me why people on the street do not have enough to eat.

Explaining that they receive through SSI 830.00 dollars a month, their flop house room costs them over 700.00 dollars a month. Leaving them with little money to eat, buy toiletries etc. Many men get a few dollars from this  dwelling operated by a church association (will not name the denomination), and drink it away. It is a lose lose situation I thought but continued listening. The first lady chimed in that she was 75 years old and had to live this way. “Please go down there ma’am and see for yourself how they take the money from them and these people are sleeping on the street in front of the building!”  she said passionately.  I thanked her for telling me about the crisis they face and walked away feeling helpless. Walking away my thoughts went to Janice and her tale of survival on the streets.

Janice, had told me how many others on the street use those payday loan places (which need strong regulations) and get caught in a never-ending cycle of borrowing to pay off earlier loans with them. She asked me to speak with the Mayor on her many issues of women living on the street.

I feel they do need a voice as for it being me I don’t know…
